Spinning .... my new addiction
I have been trying to find a cardio exercise that works for me and my scoliosis for so long that it feels like forever. I have tried cross training, swimming, aqua aerobics, fast walking… but I couldn’t make anything stick.
It’s really hard for scolis (especially those like me that have rods in their spine) to find appropriate cardio exercise - and whilst my heart remains with swimming, with the limited pool choices around here, and even more limited available time for me, I haven’t been able to make swimming part of my weekly routine, particularly in the cold, dark winter.
But this January, as part of my new years resolution, I started my spin journey. The studio is a 10 minute walk away, the classes are 45minutes long, and there are plenty of class options - so far so good.
I was very nervous at first, having never been to a spin class before. And after my initial newbie anxiety about setting up the bike (ably helped by more instructor) I was off. And ever since I’ve been going once a week.
I primarily started spinning to improve my heart health but there are many other benefits and Pilates and spinning complement each other hugely.
Spinning places minimal stress on the joints making it perfect for people recovering from injury or who (like me) need a low impact workout to get the heart pumping. There’s the added benefits of burning calories, strengthening and toning muscles (of the legs in particular), and like all cardio workouts the endorphin release helps boost mood and reduce stress.
Spinning perfectly complements Pilates – spinning can often lead to tight hips, quads, glutes and lower back, whilst getting on the reformer after a class helps counteract this by strengthening and lengthening these muscles, reducing the risk of injury and promoting better mobility. And strength gained from Pilates workouts certainly assist with endurance, breath control, posture, body awareness, and focus required in spin classes.
So if you haven’t already, have a look if there is a local spin studio near you and give it a go. I’m almost certain you won’t regret it.
